Why is Mobile SEO Important?

Over 60% of organic searches come from mobile devices. And, as this figure continues to increase, desktop searches continue to fall. In fact, Google reported that 56% of in-store shoppers used mobile devices to research products whilst in-store. How Do You Tell if a Website is Mobile Optimised?

If you use a mobile SEO agency, they will be able to tell you whether or not your website has been optimised for mobile devices. If not,  there are a few other ways to help you determine if your website is mobile-friendly:

  • Use a tool such as Google’s Mobile-Friendly Test on Search Console.
  • Use a desktop browser. Minimise the screen so that it isn’t full-screen. Drag the left side and shrink the window towards the right. If your website is mobile-friendly, the content will respond to the changing screen size. 
  • Use a mobile browser. Open your website on your mobile device. Check whether or not any content is cut off or if the navigation menu loads correctly.
  • Use Page Speed Insights.  Enter your URL and click Analyse. Click on the Mobile tab. This tool provides you with information on how quickly pages load on mobile devices.

Is Mobile SEO Different from Desktop SEO?

Mobile SEO uses many of the same best practices as desktop SEO, however, there are an additional set of factors that are only relevant on mobile devices. Here are some of the main SEO elements that differ:

  • Search engine results pages (SERPs) – the layout of SERPs will differ by screen size. This means that a number of Google’s features (particularly those on the right) have to slot into the left column on mobile. This may push down organic results and mean that first-page rankings on desktop could equate to second-page rankings on mobile.
  • Location location plays a huge role in what search results are served to a user. This is less relevant on desktop as such devices aren’t regularly moving from place to place.
  • Technical configurations – there are three options when optimising for mobile SEO. This needs to be configured for optimal results;
    • Responsive design – your site retains the same HTML code and content but displays settings automatically adjust to fit each individual screen size. 
    • Dynamic serving – the server will respond with different HTML and CSS code on the same URL.
  • Separate URLs – different URLs are used to display your website on different mobile devices.
